The Fargo Moorhead 2009 Year in Review

Submitted by on December 28, 2009 – 1:32 pmOne Comment

2009 2As I look outside at the high snow drifts and the streets that haven’t been plowed yet, I am having flashbacks to last winter, when the drifts were higher than many of our neighbor’s houses. Of course, this thought triggers the memory of one of the biggest events in 2009 for the Fargo-Moorhead area – The Flood of the Century. The entire nation watched as community volunteers helped save the cities with their hard work. You couldn’t help but watch the news during sand bagging breaks to see the latest prediction for the flood crest. As I was searched for some facts about the flood, I came upon this interesting blog that was mentioned previously on the Directory of Fargo-Moorhead website.  It really puts all of those sandbags into perspective. Check this out for a visual reproduction of the vast amount of sand.

The Fargo Marathon has become one of the fastest growing events around. Runner’s World magazine has ranked the Fargo Marathon 8th in the Top Ten Marathons in the United States. It was also highlighted as the “Best Value” marathon for its clothing, finishing medals, guest speakers, and expo. Registration is now open for the 2010 Fargo Marathon. Prices go up January 1st, so if you know you are going to run, sign up now!

The Fargo Airshow was named the number one show for 2009 by the Blue Angels. The Blue Angels flew 72 shows in 35 cities in 2009. Following each show the participants filled out a survey grading each show. The Fargo Airshow was consistently rated as 5 in many categories or points. The Blue Angels also announced that they will return to Fargo on August 13th and 14th, 2011. The 2009 show drew record crowds and allowed the non profit Fargo AirShow to pay out over $75,000 to other area non profits.

Heritage Hjemkomst Festival  – During this three day summer event, festivalgoers had a chance to sample authentic Scandinavian food, listen and dance to traditional folk music, participate in genealogical research, and purchase Scandinavian arts and crafts.

Please feel free to comment on these events or add others to the list. 2009 was a busy year and I’m sure that 2010 will only get busier. To stay current on the events happening in the Fargo-Moorhead area, check of the Directory of Fargo-Moorhead website.
