Rules of Etiquette for the Fargo Moorhead Dog Parks

dog-parkNow that we have reached the “dog” days of summer, I felt that it would be appropriate to cover some guidelines for the local dog parks of Fargo Moorhead.  As a dog lover, I have enjoyed many evenings watching my pooch run around, socialize, and get some well needed exercise.  This experience can be wonderful for both dogs and owners if everyone in the park follows a few simple rules:

1.  If you bring your dog to the park and he or she regularly becomes aggressive with the other dogs, it is time for you and your pet to leave.  This can save you money in possible vet bills and can avoid a potentially bad situation.  It only takes one aggressive dog (or aggressive owner) to ruin a good evening at the park.  If it appears your dog seeks out conflict he or she is not ready for the park yet.

2.  When your dog leaves waste in the park, promptly remove it with a bag and put it in the waste basket provided.   I try to bring an extra bag with me and remove an additional dog’s waste that was left by an irresponsible owner in order to keep the park clean.

3.  Let your dog run, keep kids on the leash (I’m joking but you know what I mean).  Too often, I have seen young children left to run around a dog park with little to no supervision.  I have seen children get knocked over or trampled by large dogs.  It is not the best environment for children.  I choose to leave my kids at home and play with them at another time.

4.  If your dog has a favorite toy or you have recently spent $30 on a nice retrieving dummy, you should leave it at home.  Often times, dogs will play with other dog’s toys and it takes a durable toy to last more than one or two visits.  Expect that if you bring a toy to the park you will probably not bring it home.

5.  Finally, bring your own water for your dog to drink.  Don’t assume there will be working facilities to water your dog or that someone else will share their water with you.  It is very easy for a dog to overheat and a simple dish and container of water will prevent this from happening.
