In my opinion, the Fargo Moorhead area has many opportunities to take in cultural events. I was just looking at the summer schedule for the Minnesota State University Moorhead Straw Hat Players and they have five shows running throughout June and July. I have attended a couple different shows that the Straw Hat Players have put on, and I have never left disappointed. I am very excited about this summer’s lineup because all of the shows are rated G or PG.

Nunsense, playing June 8 – 11, is a musical which is rated G. It is playing on the Gaede stage starting at 7:30. If you are unfamiliar with this show, it is a comedy which tells the story of a group of nuns that are trying to raise money for the burial of 52 sisters who were accidentally poisoned by their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God. The remaining nuns, led by Reverend Mary Regina, a former circus performer, put on a variety show in the school gym in hopes of raising enough money for their deceased sisters.

All Shook Up is a rated G musical performed at Hansen theatre on June 15 – 18. This musical depicts a rock and roller who recently got out of prison and heads to a small Midwestern town where anything with excitement is basically outlawed. He breaks all of the rules of the strict Mayor including wearing tight pants, kissing in public, and playing loud music. This musical will definitely keep your feet tapping!

Altar Boyz, a musical rated PG, is about 5 small town boys who are trying to save the world through their songs and fans. With songs such as “Girl You Make Me Wanna Wait” and “Jesus Called Me On My Cell Phone” might work in their town, but what will the listeners in New York City think?

The Tempest, Shakepeare’s magical romance, rated G is a comedy for the entire family. It is filled with excitement, storms, castaways on a remote island, romance, magic, love, and yes… even a monster. This classic story is funny and sweet, mysterious and exciting. The Tempest plays July 13 – 16 at Gaede Stage starting at 7:30.

The Music Man will run July 22 – 23 and 27 – 30. I am really looking forward to this show! I love the songs in this musical. The story is about a traveling salesman who tries to con the entire town of River City, Iowa. He attempts to convince the town that they need a boy’s marching band, and while most buy into this theory, he still needs to win over the local music teacher and librarian, Miss Marian Paroo. Good luck with that, Professor Harold Hill!

You can order tickets online or call the MSUM box office at 218-477-2271. Box office hours in the summer are Monday – Friday from 12:00 – 4:00 and 90 minutes prior to curtain.
