The Fargo Moorhead community and Concordia community are coming together to learn about local foods, discover the valley and explore new flavors at the 2nd farmers market held at Concordia College.

“This is a great opportunity to meet local farmers and discover what foods you could utilize in your own kitchen that come from the area,” said Janet Paul Rice, member of the food working group at Concordia.

The farmers market, featuring producers from the Red River Valley, is taking place Tuesday, October 20, 2009 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Knutson Campus Center. Items will be available for purchase and the farmers will be on hand to answer any questions and talk about the benefits of eating local food.

Some items that will be featured are certified organic beef, organic vegetables, organic flax, organic pork, soap, honey, bread and more.

“We are really excited to hold this event on campus. This is a great way to find out where your food comes from and experience fresh flavors directly from our area,” said Dr. Gretchen Harvey, member of Concordia’s food working group.

Concordia’s Dining Services department regularly features local foods in Anderson Commons, Concordia’s all-you-care-to-eat dining facility. These items include pasta, honey, bread, chicken, herbs, potatoes and more.

The Fargo-Moorhead community is invited to this event, which is sponsored by the Food Working Group of the Sustainability Task Force. The Food Working Group is made up of members of the Concordia community who are dedicated to finding sustainable food sources, utilizing local foods and reducing food waste on the Concordia campus.
