6 Tips On Managing Productivity With Short-Term Illness

When a person gets a short-term illness, dealing with productivity issues can be difficult. Here are 6 tips to help you manage productivity:

1. Use your designated sick time toward just that. Many times people take advantage of their sick time and use it for recreation (we all know we’ve done it) and then when we really get sick it is very stressful because we may not get paid or have to return sooner because we have no sick time left. Stress you don’t need.

2. Keep yourself hydrated and eating well. Did you know hot, clear fluids are the best for the common cold and flu? Cranberry juice wards off bladder infections. Get a lot of calcium for mending bones.

3. Your work doesn’t stop just because you are sick. Take advantage of working from home even half days if possible. It will not only make you feel a sense of achievement but it will prevent coming back to a nightmare.

4. Dress in something comfortable. Dress in layers if your illness will cause you to have a mild fever. If you wear makeup, wear it lightly when you are ill. Use products that are unscented especially if your illness includes nausea or vomiting.

5. Have an over-the-counter kit with the basics you need when you get ill. There’s nothing worse than having to head out to the drug store when you feel lousy. A few items could include cough syrup, ibuprofen, cold medicine (drowsy and nondrowsy), Kleenex, and the list goes on.

6. Consider the health of the other people around you. Be courteous and if possible stay away from everyone you can so they don’t catch what you have. Conference calls come in very handy at times like these.

Prevention is the best approach to avoiding short-term illnesses. Eating a healthy diet, getting a flu vaccine, exercising, and taking vitamins are just a handful of things you can do to stay well. Feel free to share any other tips you might have.

I read an article today about the transportation options in the Fargo/West Fargo/Moorhead/Dilworth area for anyone over 60 years of age and people with disabilities.

At this time of the year, it is hard for some to get transportation to and from the places they need to go on a regular basis. It is a very important component of independent living.

One source is FMRIDESOURCE.com and there are many options to choose from.

There is also a contact person to call or email to get more information on a summary of providers, schedule, etc.

Check this out if it is a service you need or someone you know needs.

Small Business Saturday 2011

This Saturday, November 26th, is the 2nd Annual Small Business Saturday and you are encouraged to “shop small”. What does that mean to you? It means that during the busiest shopping weekend of the year, you should stop by one of the many local small businesses and shop. Doing so will help fuel the economy right here in Fargo Moorhead.

Instead of stopping by one of the “big box” hardware stores, stop by your local Ace Hardware store instead. I guarantee you will have better customer service and assistance than the other stores. I usually can’t get past the front counter without someone offering to help me find what I’m there for.

Looking for something sweet to get you through the afternoon of shopping? Try the just opened Cheri’s Sweet Creations instead. Why give any more money to those huge food chains when we have so many other options of locally owned small businesses?!

One purchase is all it takes to make a huge impact in your own community. So, take the pledge to shop small this Saturday and do what you can to help support the community you live in!

Do Not Call Registry

Are you still receiving tons of calls from telemarketers or other people trying to sell you something? It’s time to take control of those unwanted calls! The National Do Not Call Registry puts you, as the consumer, in charge of stopping them. The Federal government created this national registry to make it easy and effective for you to do just that. First off, you have to call from the number you want to register (registration is free by the way). You can register both your home and mobile number(s). The number for the registry is toll free 1-888-382-1222 (or for TTY 1-866-290-4236). You can also register online at www.donotcall.gov.

The Federal Trade Commission and the states (generally through the Attorney General’s office) are enforcing the National Do Not Call Registry. Placing your number on the registry will stop most, but not all, telemarketing calls. Once you’ve been on the registry for 31 days, as I said, the majority of unwanted calls will stop.

If you go onto the site listed above, it has lots of information for you. You may be a consumer, interested in signing up, or a telemarketer or seller who wants to learn more about your responsibilities as related to the Telemarketing Sales Rule. Either way it’s good information. Call today!

Grandparents’ Day Ideas 2011

Grandparents’ Day is a very special day. It is a day where we get together with our Grandparents and spend quality time with them. Every year on Grandparents’ Day, which this year is Sunday, September 11, my family takes my Grandma and Grandpa to a park in our town and we have a big picnic. There is a lot of food, family, and fun! It is a family tradition that everyone enjoys.

My Grandparents love to bake and think it’s even better when we bake together. If it’s raining outside, another great alternative is to rent some movies, make some homemade popcorn, and have a movie day. There are numerous different things you could do on Grandparents’ Day, but the most important thing to remember is to have fun spending quality time with your Grandparents. My Grandparents and I have this favorite recipe for chocolate chip cookies that we love to make together:

1 cup Crisco, 3/4 cup brown sugar, 3/4 cup white sugar, 2 eggs, 3-1/2 cups flour, 1 tsp. soda, 1 tsp. salt, 1 cup oatmeal (optional), 1 bag semi-sweet chocolate chips.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees, and bake cookies for 10-12 min.

Free Kids Haircuts in Fargo, Monday, 8/22/11

Free kids haircuts will be available this coming Monday, August 22nd, from 12:30p – 6p in a wonderful endeavor between Josef’s School of Hair Design and the Salvation Army.

Being as kids will be heading back to school soon, they now have the chance to get a new look or cut before that time. Josef’s School of Hair Design is located at 627 NP Avenue N. in Fargo. Clients will be served on a first come, first served basis.

If you know of families that could benefit from this, please let them know about this free service! School is hard enough for some children and for them to have a nice haircut before school starts, can really make a difference in their lives!

Moorhead Horizon Middle School Plays National Anthem at Twins Game

Attention sports and music fans! The Horizon Middle School Orchestra will be performing the National Anthem at the Minnesota Twins game in Minneapolis on Thursday, August 25, 2011 . They will be performing at noon, and there will be over 200 students playing.

The kids sounds great! If you haven’t experienced Target Field yet, you’re in for a real treat. You will experience the excitement of the game and the sound of great local music.
